My secretary placed a mezuzah (a case that holds Hebrew verses from the Torah) on her cork board by the front door to our lab. I am personally not offended by this, but wondered if it was appropriate to display a religious item in an area that has many different employees with a variety of beliefs. Is this legal?
We work for the government.
depends on the workplace in question-
if its a private workplace then the rules governing can prohibit display of such items since it is not attatched to the person but to the company property-
a private company can prevent ANY display of any religious items on its own property, but couldn't prevent her from wearing a cross or jewish star or whatever. (well- they COULD but would be open to a discrimination suit).
as far as a government office? not so sure about that because it is a private individual putting up a religious symbol not government funds bieng spent in furtherance of religion. also how private the lab is. the reality though is that government workplace would likely have a general prohibition against that kind of thing so as to prevent government entanglement with religion.
